Grand Forks, N.D. – Near-critical fire weather conditions are expected to intensify across eastern North Dakota on Sunday, as warm temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds align to elevate wildfire risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect Sunday afternoon for counties east of U.S. Highway 281, including Grand Forks, Fargo, and Devils Lake. Relative humidity may drop to 20%, while southerly winds could gust up to 25 mph. Temperatures will range from the upper 70s to low 80s.

Areas under heightened risk include portions of the Red River Valley and surrounding prairie. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and to secure fire-prone equipment. Dry grasses and low soil moisture levels may allow small sparks to spread rapidly.

Saturday will remain mostly sunny with highs between 70 and 80°F, offering mild conditions before fire risk peaks on Sunday. This alert mirrors conditions last seen in late April, when similar warmth and wind led to fast-moving grassfires.

The Fire Weather Watch remains in effect through Sunday evening. Additional advisories could be issued if winds strengthen or humidity drops further.
