Muskegon, Michigan – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of western and central Michigan, bringing urgent wildfire danger to Muskegon, Mason, Mecosta, and five other counties until 6 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, strong south winds of 10 to 20 mph—gusting up to 30 mph—combined with low humidity and temperatures in the mid-70s, are creating hazardous fire weather conditions. Burn restrictions are likely in effect across the region, and residents are urged to check the Michigan DNR website or call 866-922-2876 for the latest updates.

Officials warn that any spark from outdoor grilling, campfires, chainsaws, or even discarded smoking materials could quickly ignite dry grass and brush. Popular recreation areas in Mason, Lake, and Oceana counties face elevated risk, and local fire agencies are on high alert. Residents in Osceola, Clare, and Newaygo counties should avoid any outdoor burning and remain extra cautious with power equipment.

This is the first Red Flag Warning of the season for many of these counties. The risk for rapid fire spread will remain high until winds decrease and humidity rises after sunset. Further advisories are possible if conditions persist into Tuesday.
