Des Moines, IA – Strong storms are forecast to develop late Thursday, bringing a heightened threat of large hail and gusty winds across central and northern Iowa.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, severe weather is expected to begin after 4 p.m. Thursday, April 17, and continue into the evening hours. Forecasters have issued a Level 2 (out of 5) risk for severe thunderstorms, with hail of at least 2 inches in diameter possible in areas under a hatched outlook zone.

The highest storm confidence lies in northern Iowa, including Fort Dodge, Mason City, and Storm Lake. Scattered storms may also form earlier in the day, particularly during the morning hours, though those are expected to be less intense. Gusty winds up to 58 mph may accompany these storms, especially along the I-35 corridor.

Tornadoes are currently deemed unlikely.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor NOAA Weather Radio or trusted alerts, and prepare vehicles for potential hail impacts. Those traveling Thursday evening should be alert for rapidly changing conditions.

Storms are expected to move eastward at 20–30 mph. This setup is typical of springtime instability but could still pose travel and property hazards into Thursday night.
