Douglas, AZ – A strong dust-producing wind event is set to sweep across southeastern Arizona on Thursday, triggering advisories for hazardous travel conditions and poor visibility across Eastern Cochise County and the Upper Gila River Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, a Blowing Dust Advisory and Wind Advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST on Thursday, April 17. Southwest winds are forecast to reach speeds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts potentially hitting 45 mph, especially near the Willcox Playa and along the Arizona-New Mexico border.
These winds will kick up blowing dust, reducing visibility to between one and three miles across most areas, and as low as a quarter mile in dust-prone zones. Drivers, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles, should expect difficult travel conditions and are urged to use extreme caution.
Residents with respiratory conditions are advised to remain indoors during the advisory period. Travelers encountering dust on the road should remember: “Pull Aside, Stay Alive.” Turn off lights, keep feet off the brakes, and wait until visibility improves.
This event follows typical spring wind patterns in the region, but officials caution the public not to underestimate the hazards associated with sudden dust storms.
