Anchorage, AK – A powerful winter storm is gripping the Eastern Aleutians, bringing dangerous travel conditions and near-zero visibility as heavy snow and high winds intensify across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Anchorage, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 1 a.m. AKDT Thursday. Total snow accumulation is expected to range from 8 to 20 inches, with the heaviest snowfall likely in elevated areas around Akutan. Winds from the north are gusting between 50 and 65 mph, creating severe blowing snow and whiteout conditions.
The storm’s core is tracking slightly eastward, which may reduce totals near Unalaska while increasing snowfall around Akutan. Forecasters note that the most hazardous conditions are expected through Wednesday morning, with lingering snow showers and gusty winds likely into early Thursday.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for delays. Road visibility may drop to half a mile or less at times, with significant drifting in exposed areas. Officials recommend keeping emergency supplies such as food, water, and flashlights in vehicles.
This storm continues a trend of late-season systems impacting Alaska, with travel and safety risks elevated through midweek.
