Danville, VA – Residents across southern Virginia and northern North Carolina are being urged to take precautions as temperatures are expected to dip near freezing early Thursday morning, prompting a frost advisory.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the advisory will be in effect from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. EDT Thursday, with temperatures forecast to fall as low as 33°F. The advisory affects communities in Stokes, Rockingham, and Caswell counties in North Carolina, as well as Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville, and surrounding areas in Virginia, including Botetourt, Patrick, Franklin, Bedford, Henry, and Pittsylvania counties.
Officials warn that frost may damage or kill sensitive vegetation, particularly for gardeners and farmers with unprotected plants. Residents are encouraged to cover outdoor plants or bring them indoors overnight to prevent cold-weather damage.
This late-season frost follows several days of mild temperatures, a common but challenging pattern for growers in the region. Historically, frost events in April are not unusual, especially in higher elevations and rural valleys.
The advisory serves as a reminder that spring planting should be timed carefully, especially in areas prone to overnight temperature drops. For additional information, visit weather.gov or consult local emergency management alerts.
