Chicago, IL – Hummingbird migration season is officially underway, and Illinois birdwatchers are beginning to see ruby-throated hummingbirds in local yards. The first of these tiny travelers have arrived in the state, marking the start of a much-anticipated spring event for bird lovers across the region.

According to Hummingbird Central, a citizen science project that tracks the birds’ journey, Illinois is seeing the first sightings of migrating hummingbirds around mid-April, with full migration expected by May. The birds are expected to stop along their route through the state, especially in areas like Will County, where local wildlife enthusiasts are preparing their hummingbird feeders.

Local parks, such as Plum Creek Nature Center, have already placed out feeders in preparation for early arrivals. These feeders help ensure migrating birds have a reliable nectar source to fuel their journey north. It’s essential to remember, however, that hummingbirds may stop briefly and continue on their way to Canada.

With migration in full swing, birdwatchers are advised to check their local areas and enjoy the spectacle as these tiny creatures begin their seasonal travels.
