Philadelphia, PA – Rain returns for much of the Mid-Atlantic region Thursday, with showers expected to continue through Sunday. Areas of New York and Pennsylvania could see snow mixing in, particularly in higher elevations, as the system progresses.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, recent rainfall has helped ease drought conditions across the region. However, moderate to severe drought classifications remain in parts of Virginia, Maryland, and central Pennsylvania. Rainfall totals are projected between 1 to 2 inches by Sunday, offering some continued drought relief but falling short of erasing long-standing precipitation deficits.
Snow may mix in by Friday and Saturday in hilly areas of northern Pennsylvania and southern New York, where cooler air lingers. The mix of rain and snow could cause slick roads in elevated areas, especially overnight.
Residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and take precautions if traveling through elevated terrain. Minor flooding is not expected but cannot be ruled out in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Despite improvements, officials continue to urge water conservation as drought persists in several counties. The next update from the U.S. Drought Monitor is scheduled for Thursday, April 17.
