Appalachian Region Weather Alert: Thunderstorm Watch With Wind and Hail Until 6 AM Monday

Charleston, WV – A dangerous line of severe thunderstorms is expected to push through the Appalachian region overnight, bringing strong winds, hail, and the potential for isolated tornadoes through 6 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until early Monday morning for eastern Kentucky, far southern Ohio, western West Virginia, and far western Virginia. The alert was issued at 10:55 p.m. Sunday.

Winds could gust up to 70 mph, with isolated hail events up to 1 inch in diameter. The NWS noted a tornado or two is also possible as the storm system tracks eastward. The watch zone spans approximately 60 miles east and west of a line from 40 miles north of Charleston, WV, to 30 miles southeast of London, KY.

Residents in the watch area should remain alert and monitor weather updates throughout the night. Power outages and fallen trees are likely in impacted areas, and travel may become hazardous due to wind damage and debris.
