Palm Springs, CA – Residents across the Coachella Valley are under an air quality alert as windblown dust continues to elevate harmful particle pollution levels through noon Wednesday.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, cities including Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, La Quinta, and Coachella are experiencing conditions that may pose serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with heart or lung disease.

The alert, in effect until Wednesday at 12 p.m., warns that small particulate matter can penetrate deep into the lungs, increasing the likelihood of asthma attacks, respiratory infections, and cardiovascular complications.

Officials advise limiting outdoor activity based on AQI levels:

  • Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups): Limit prolonged exertion outdoors.
  • Red (Unhealthy): Sensitive groups should avoid outdoor exposure; others should reduce outdoor time.
  • Purple (Very Unhealthy): Everyone should minimize outdoor activity.
  • Maroon (Hazardous): All outdoor physical activity should be avoided.

Residents are urged to keep windows closed, run air conditioners or purifiers, and avoid burning candles or using gasoline-powered tools indoors.
