Charleston, WV – Severe thunderstorms are forecast to strike Charleston and surrounding areas late Sunday, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible travel disruptions.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, WV, storms will begin to develop after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the heaviest rainfall and thunderstorm activity expected between 9 p.m. Sunday and early Monday morning. The chance of rain climbs to 100% by Monday. Drivers on U.S. Route 60 and nearby roadways should expect possible delays and low visibility due to downpours and wet pavement.

South winds will increase to 10 mph, with gusts reaching 21 mph by Sunday evening. Rainfall totals could range between a tenth and three-quarters of an inch, with localized higher amounts in thunderstorms. Flash flooding is not expected but cannot be ruled out in areas with poor drainage.

Showers will continue through Monday before tapering off by late evening. Cooler air moves in Monday night with temperatures dropping into the upper 30s.
