Blacksburg, VA – A heightened wildfire risk continues across parts of Virginia today, as gusty winds and dry conditions create a dangerous environment for fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, south winds reaching up to 30 mph and relative humidity levels as low as 20% will persist through 8 p.m. Monday. These conditions, paired with dry vegetation, could cause any fires that start to spread rapidly or become uncontrollable.
The agency emphasized that all outdoor burning should be avoided during this period. Even minor ignition sources, such as discarded cigarettes or sparks from equipment, could lead to significant fire outbreaks.
The fire risk is particularly critical in grassy and brush-covered areas. Residents are urged to check with local fire departments for any active burn bans and to follow regional safety protocols.
Officials recommend delaying outdoor work involving heat or flames, securing trailer chains to prevent sparks, and staying alert for fire warnings. These fire weather conditions are unusual for this time of year and can pose severe risks to property and safety.
The alert remains active until 8 p.m. this evening, when winds are expected to ease and humidity may begin to rise.
