Sioux Falls, SD – Strong winds are expected to sweep across southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska early Sunday, prompting a Wind Advisory for the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts reaching up to 50 mph will begin around 3 a.m. CDT Sunday and persist until 7 p.m. The advisory covers multiple counties across eastern and southeastern South Dakota—including Minnehaha, Lincoln, and Yankton—as well as Dixon and Dakota counties in Nebraska.
The high winds may down tree limbs, cause minor property damage, and result in scattered power outages. Unsecured outdoor objects could be blown around, and travel for high-profile vehicles may become hazardous on open highways.
Residents in affected areas—including Sioux Falls, Vermillion, Yankton, and North Sioux City—are advised to secure outdoor items and exercise caution during travel. Extra attention should be given to early-morning and evening commutes, especially in rural and elevated areas.
This level of wind is typical during early spring transition periods but still poses risks. Drivers should maintain a firm grip on the wheel and remain alert to sudden gusts, especially near bridges and open fields.
The advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Sunday.
