Amarillo, TX – Warm, dry conditions combined with gusty winds are raising fire weather concerns across the Texas Panhandle Saturday, ahead of a cold front that will bring cooler temperatures by Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, south to southwest winds will range from 20 to 25 mph Saturday with highs climbing between 74°F and 83°F. These conditions have triggered heightened fire weather awareness across the region. A shift in wind direction and speed is expected overnight as the cold front passes, bringing northwest to north winds of 10 to 15 mph and dropping overnight lows to between 36°F and 50°F.

By Sunday, daytime highs will fall to a cooler 60°F to 67°F with north winds continuing between 15 and 20 mph. Sunday night temperatures are forecast to dip even lower, ranging from 32°F to 40°F with east to southeast winds.

Residents should remain alert for updated fire weather alerts and avoid outdoor burning. The significant temperature swing serves as a reminder of the Panhandle’s rapidly changing spring weather pattern. Drivers should also be cautious of blowing dust during wind gusts, especially in rural areas with dry soil conditions.
