Atlanta, GA – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for northern Georgia until 9 p.m. Wednesday due to high winds, low humidity, and dry conditions that significantly increase wildfire risk. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City warns that any fires that develop could spread rapidly, urging residents to avoid outdoor burning.

According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Chattooga, Union, Towns, Gordon, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, and White counties. Winds from the southwest are expected to reach 10 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph and potentially 40 mph at higher elevations. Relative humidity levels will drop as low as 15% in some areas, further exacerbating fire danger. Temperatures are forecasted to range between 75 and 80 degrees.

This warning includes the Chattahoochee National Forest, an area particularly vulnerable to wildfire outbreaks. Authorities strongly advise against any outdoor burning and recommend residents stay alert for potential fire hazards. Local officials urge those in the affected areas to check with local burn permitting authorities before attempting any controlled burns.

Residents should take precautions, including securing flammable materials and being prepared to act quickly in case of fire emergencies. Fire crews and emergency officials have been advised of the increased fire threat and remain on high alert.
