Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which fraudsters pose as sheriff’s officials to demand payment. Authorities emphasize that they will never call residents to request payment or ask for money via Cash App, Venmo, Zelle, or check over the phone.
According to the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office, scammers are spoofing official phone numbers to make it appear as though the call is legitimate. Residents are urged to remain cautious and avoid sharing personal information or making payments if they receive such a call.
Officials advise that if anyone is contacted by someone claiming to be from the sheriff’s office and requesting money, they should hang up immediately and report the incident. Complaints can be filed directly with the Sheriff’s Office at phillysheriff.com or through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) at 1-888-225-5322. Victims of this scam are encouraged to notify their local police department or the District Attorney’s Office.
The Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to only make payments through official government websites and to verify any suspicious requests before taking action.
