Minneapolis, MN – A strong winter storm is shifting south, prompting updated weather alerts across Minnesota and Wisconsin. Areas south and east of central Minnesota are expected to experience the most severe conditions, with blizzard warnings in place for several counties.

According to the National Weather Service, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect for parts of southern Minnesota, while a Winter Storm Warning is active for Pepin and Eau Claire counties in Wisconsin. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected from Wednesday morning through early Wednesday afternoon. Winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts near 45 mph along I-90, will create whiteout conditions and hazardous travel.

Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches are forecast, with higher amounts expected in southeastern Pepin County. The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds will make travel dangerous, particularly during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel. If travel is required, motorists should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. Up-to-date road conditions can be found at 511wi.gov or by calling 511.

The storm is expected to weaken by Wednesday evening, though lingering snow and gusty winds may continue to impact visibility into the night.
