Marquette, MI – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Upper Michigan, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to create dangerous travel conditions from Wednesday morning through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Marquette and Alger counties, effective from 10 a.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday. Forecasts predict total snow accumulations between 5 and 12 inches, with the heaviest snowfall expected in higher terrain areas inland from Lake Superior. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph near the lakeshore, leading to widespread blowing snow and whiteout conditions.
Travel is expected to be very difficult to impossible Wednesday afternoon and evening, particularly during the evening commute. The combination of heavy snowfall and high winds could significantly reduce visibility, increasing the risk of hazardous driving conditions.
Residents are advised to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must be on the roads should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. Power outages are also possible due to the strong winds and heavy snow.
For the latest updates on road conditions and weather alerts, residents should monitor local news and official weather advisories.
