Des Moines, IA – A powerful blizzard is set to impact Iowa on Wednesday, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions across the region. The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning for portions of west-central, north-central, and central Iowa from 5 AM to 10 PM CDT Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snowfall rates could reach two inches per hour, with total accumulations between 2 and 10 inches. The heaviest snow is expected in northern and central parts of the state. Additionally, wind gusts up to 60 mph could create whiteout conditions and cause tree damage. Thundersnow is also possible, further intensifying the storm.

Travel is expected to be extremely difficult to impossible, particularly during the morning and evening commutes. Authorities advise against travel unless absolutely necessary. Those who must be on the roads should carry a winter survival kit and remain with their vehicle if stranded.

Residents are urged to stay informed on weather updates and road conditions via the Iowa 511 app, www.511ia.org, or by dialing 511.

Emergency preparedness measures, such as securing loose outdoor items and stocking up on essential supplies, are recommended ahead of the storm.
