NEWBERRY, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin repairs on the M-48 overpass at I-75 near Rudyard on April 14, impacting traffic in Chippewa County. The $5 million project is the second phase of MDOT’s overpass repair initiative.
According to MDOT, the project will require a full closure of M-48 at I-75, with eastbound and westbound traffic detoured via Mackinac Trail and M-80. I-75 will also be reduced to one lane in both directions, with a 60 mph speed limit and a 12-foot width restriction. In work zones, speeds will be further reduced to 45 mph.
The project, scheduled to run through August 29, 2025, will involve deck overlays, structural patching, railing replacement, and other safety improvements. MDOT estimates the investment will support 48 jobs.
Drivers should expect delays and use alternate routes if possible. The repairs aim to extend the lifespan of the overpass, ensuring safer travel in the region.
