Pueblo, CO – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for multiple counties across southern Colorado, including Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Walsenburg, and Trinidad. The warning is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. MDT on Sunday due to strong winds and low humidity, significantly increasing wildfire risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, wind speeds will range from 30 to 40 mph, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph in some areas. Humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 6%, creating conditions for rapid fire spread. A Fire Weather Watch will follow from Monday morning through Tuesday evening, signaling continued extreme fire risk.
Counties affected include Huerfano, Las Animas, Crowley, Kiowa, El Paso, and Pueblo. Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose materials, and remain prepared for potential evacuations if fires ignite.
Authorities warn that fires will spread uncontrollably under these conditions, potentially causing significant destruction. Residents should stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and emergency alerts.
A Red Flag Warning indicates that dangerous fire conditions are imminent or occurring, while a Fire Weather Watch signals that similar conditions are expected in the near future. Residents should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent wildfires.
