Fargo, ND – A powerful winter storm is set to bring blizzard conditions to the Northern Plains, including parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota, through Saturday. The storm, driven by a near-record low-pressure system for March, is expected to produce heavy snowfall, high winds, and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour are likely in eastern North Dakota, South Dakota, and western Minnesota by Saturday morning. These snowfall totals, combined with wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, could lead to blizzard conditions and whiteout visibility.
The system is also bringing widespread strong winds across the Central U.S., with gusts potentially reaching 90 mph in the Southern Plains. This could result in dangerous travel conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles.
In the Intermountain West, heavy snowfall is expected above 4,000 feet before tapering off later in the weekend. The combination of snow and strong winds will continue to create hazardous conditions across affected regions.
Authorities urge residents to prepare for significant disruptions and to avoid unnecessary travel. Those in the storm’s path should stay updated on road closures and emergency advisories as conditions rapidly change.
