Chicago, IL – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for much of northern Illinois, with critical fire weather conditions expected from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. CDT Friday. Strong winds and low humidity could contribute to rapid fire spread, making outdoor burning highly dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago, affected areas include Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, Lee, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, La Salle, Kendall, Grundy, Will, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois, and Ford counties. The warning replaces a previously issued Fire Weather Watch.

South winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, are expected throughout the afternoon and evening. Coupled with relative humidity levels as low as 30-35%, these conditions significantly increase the risk of fast-spreading fires.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid outdoor burning and exercise extreme caution with any potential fire hazards, including grilling and discarding cigarettes. The combination of warm temperatures, dry air, and strong winds could lead to dangerous fire behavior.

The Red Flag Warning will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Friday. Authorities urge residents to stay updated on local advisories and report any signs of fire activity immediately to emergency services.
