Hastings, NE – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Nebraska from noon until 9 p.m. today, with strong winds and low humidity increasing fire danger across the state.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings, the warning has been expanded to cover the entire forecast area. Winds from the south will range from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 12%, creating conditions conducive to rapid fire spread. Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning.

In addition to today’s fire risk, a marginal risk for severe weather is forecast for Friday, particularly in central and eastern Nebraska. The NWS warns of potential quarter-sized hail and damaging winds up to 60 mph between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. There is a low threat of tornadoes, but residents are urged to stay alert.

Authorities recommend having multiple ways to receive weather alerts and being prepared for rapidly changing conditions. More details are available on the NWS website.
