Caribou, ME – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across much of northern and central Maine as a mix of snow and freezing rain continues to impact travel conditions on Wednesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of slippery roads and reduced visibility, particularly during the morning and evening commutes.

According to the NWS, areas including Northern Somerset, Northern Piscataquis, Northern Penobscot, and parts of Aroostook County can expect up to one inch of snow accumulation and a light glaze of ice. The advisory for these regions will remain in effect until 1 p.m. EST. Meanwhile, Northeast and Northwest Aroostook counties will experience ongoing snowfall throughout the day, with the advisory extending until 10 p.m. EST.

In Central Somerset County, freezing rain and snow are expected to persist until 10 a.m. EST, making early morning travel hazardous, especially on untreated roads. Authorities urge drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time for travel.

Residents are advised to check the latest road conditions at newengland511.org before heading out. Even minor snow and ice accumulations can make roads dangerously slick, particularly in rural and elevated areas.

The wintry mix is expected to clear later in the evening, improving travel conditions into Thursday.
