Charleston, SC – A Freeze Watch has been issued for portions of southeast Georgia and South Carolina, with temperatures expected to drop as low as 30°F from late Sunday night through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the affected areas include Jenkins, Screven, Bulloch, and Effingham counties in Georgia, along with Allendale, Hampton, Colleton, Dorchester, Berkeley, and Jasper counties in South Carolina. Cities such as Walterboro, Summerville, Statesboro, and Edisto Beach are included in the advisory.
Officials warn that the sub-freezing temperatures could harm crops, sensitive vegetation, and outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to take precautions, including covering or bringing in tender plants and insulating exposed pipes to prevent damage.
While the cold spell is temporary, it marks a significant drop for early March. Typically, temperatures in the region stay above freezing during this period. The National Weather Service advises that frost and freeze conditions could have an impact on agricultural activities and unprotected infrastructure.
Residents should stay informed through local weather updates and prepare ahead of time to mitigate potential damage. Those with outdoor pets should also ensure they have proper shelter from the cold.
The Freeze Watch will remain in effect until Monday morning, with temperatures expected to rise later in the day.
