Cass County, IN – Heavy snowfall and low visibility created dangerous conditions on US35 this morning as emergency crews responded to a semi tractor fire that forced a full roadway shutdown, according to the Cass County Emergency Management Agency.

Officials said the call came in near US35 over Old State Road 25, where first responders from Cass County Fire District 1, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, and Cass County EMS arrived to find the tractor of a semi truck fully engulfed in flames. Snow continued falling as firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from spreading.

According to emergency management officials, crews successfully extinguished the fire before it reached the trailer, which was confirmed to be empty at the time of the incident. The fast-growing flames produced heavy black smoke, further complicating visibility in already snowy conditions.

US35 was temporarily closed while firefighters operated hose lines and secured the scene. Officials said no injuries or deaths were reported.

Emergency responders credited coordinated teamwork for the quick containment of the fire, especially given the weather challenges. Images released by the agency show firefighters battling intense flames, thick smoke, and accumulating snow as they worked along the highway.

The cause of the fire has not yet been released, and the roadway was reopened after the scene was made safe.

Cass County EMA publicly thanked firefighters, law enforcement, and EMS personnel for their rapid response, noting that reduced visibility from snowfall made the operation significantly more hazardous. “We are proud to serve Cass County,” the agency said.
