Cheyenne, WY – A significant shift in the weather pattern is taking shape across parts of the Rocky Mountain region this week, bringing mountain snow, sharply cooler temperatures, gusty winds and increasing chances for rain across Wyoming and New Mexico.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, the changes will develop throughout the week of October 12 16, replacing recent warm conditions with a more unsettled fall weather pattern.
In southeastern Wyoming, temperatures could struggle to reach 50 degrees Wednesday , with Cheyenne forecast to reach just 48 degrees after a Monday high near 72.
Laramie could fall from 67 degrees Monday to 44 Wednesday, while Rawlins is forecast to reach 47.
Rain is expected across valleys and plains, while accumulating snow is possible in higher mountain elevations Wednesday into Thursday.
The National Weather Service also highlights the potential for widespread frost or freezing temperatures Thursday and Friday mornings.
Farther south, New Mexico faces a different set of weather concerns.
South and southwest winds could produce gusts approaching 40 mph Monday and Tuesday, particularly across northeastern portions of the state.
The strongest gusts could create difficult crosswinds along Interstate 40, U.S. 550, U.S. 60 and U.S. 64.
Las Vegas, New Mexico, could experience gusts near 39 mph Monday, while Clayton could see gusts around 37 mph.
Temperatures across New Mexico will also trend cooler later in the week.
Roswell, forecast to reach 90 degrees Monday and Tuesday, could drop to 66 by Friday. Albuquerque could cool from 78 Monday to 67 Friday.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible, with precipitation chances generally increasing Thursday and Friday.
Residents traveling across the region should monitor changing forecasts, particularly along exposed highways and higher mountain routes.
For parts of Wyoming, the approaching system could deliver an early reminder of winter, while New Mexico transitions toward cooler, more unsettled autumn weather.
