Cheyenne, WY – Drivers across southeast Wyoming should prepare for accumulating snowfall and potentially hazardous travel conditions Wednesday, Oct. 14, through Thursday, Oct. 15, as a winter storm brings moderate to occasionally heavy snow to higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, the Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to include the Interstate 80 Summit, northern Snowy Range Foothills near Elk Mountain and the Sierra Madre Range.
The newly included areas are under an advisory beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday and continuing through noon Thursday.
Mountain Snowfall Could Reach 12 Inches
Forecasters expect snowfall accumulations ranging from 6 to 12 inches in mountain locations, with periods of heavier snowfall possible.
Along the Interstate 80 corridor, accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are forecast, particularly in higher elevation areas.
Wind gusts could reach 25 to 35 mph, potentially reducing visibility during periods of snowfall.
Interstate 80 Travel Could Become Difficult
The expanded advisory includes the I 80 Summit and nearby elevated terrain, where snow covered roads and reduced visibility could create hazardous driving conditions.
The National Weather Service cautions that snow may initially struggle to accumulate on relatively warm pavement, creating uncertainty about roadway impacts.
Snow Levels Drop Thursday Morning
Snow levels are expected to fall toward 6,000 feet early Thursday, potentially bringing the season's first snowfall to Rawlins, Saratoga, Laramie and surrounding communities.
However, accumulation in lower elevation locations remains uncertain.
Drivers Urged to Monitor Conditions
Travelers should use caution, allow additional time and check highway conditions before departure.
Motorists can monitor Wyoming road conditions through WYDOT's 511 system and updated forecasts at weather.gov/cys.
