Cheyenne, WY – Drivers traveling along Interstate 80 in southeastern Wyoming could face dangerous wind conditions beginning Sunday afternoon, October 11, as forecasters warn that powerful gusts reaching 65 mph may develop and continue overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a High Wind Watch will take effect at 3 p.m. Sunday and remain in place until 6 a.m. Monday, October 12.
The watch covers the Arlington and Elk Mountain areas along Interstate 80, along with portions of northern and southwestern Carbon County.
Wind gusts between 60 and 65 mph are possible, creating potentially hazardous travel conditions, particularly for lightweight and high profile vehicles.
Truck drivers, recreational vehicle operators and motorists towing trailers could face increased difficulty maintaining control if strong crosswinds develop.
The Interstate 80 corridor near Arlington and Elk Mountain is among the areas specifically highlighted by forecasters.
Strong winds could also affect exposed stretches of roadway near Rawlins and surrounding portions of Carbon County within the watch area.
The most important travel window begins Sunday afternoon and continues through early Monday morning.
Motorists planning evening or overnight trips should monitor changing conditions before entering the affected highway corridor.
Drivers of semitrailers, campers and other high profile vehicles should pay particular attention to wind forecasts and any travel restrictions issued by transportation officials.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation provides current highway conditions and restrictions through its 511 travel information system.
Residents in affected communities should also secure lightweight outdoor items that could be displaced by strong gusts.
A High Wind Watch means conditions are favorable for potentially dangerous winds, but the strongest gusts are not guaranteed.
Forecasters may issue additional alerts as the event approaches.
Travelers should check updated National Weather Service forecasts and WYDOT road conditions before departing Sunday evening.
