Town of Osceola, WI – Nine people, including seven children, were treated at hospitals Wednesday after a carbon monoxide emergency inside a Fond du Lac County home, authorities said.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff ’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 2:05 a.m. Wednesday from a homeowner on W847 County Road B in the town of Osceola. The caller reported that several people inside the residence were experiencing symptoms consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning.
Emergency crews from the Eden Fire Department , Campbellsport Ambulance and sheriff’s office responded. Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue and Mount Calvary Ambulance were later requested to help transport patients.
Authorities initially reported that six children, ages 4, 7, 9, 12, 14 and 17 , along with a 46 year old man and 42 year old woman , were transported for treatment.
In an update Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said the original release inadvertently omitted a 16 year old who was also inside the home, bringing the total number of people treated for carbon monoxide exposure to nine.
All nine were treated and released from the hospital , according to investigators.
A preliminary investigation determined that a boiler inside the home was malfunctioning while the homeowner had been attempting repairs. Authorities said the malfunction caused carbon monoxide exhaust to enter the residence.
The incident remains under investigation by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said the emergency also serves as a reminder for residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors , particularly as colder weather approaches and heating systems begin operating more frequently.
No additional injuries were reported in the sheriff’s update.
