St. Croix Falls, WI – A rocky landscape inside Wisconsin's Interstate Park is drawing attention for its unusual plant habitat, where cactus, moss and lichen survive in an environment that requires careful conservation management.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Centennial Bedrock Glade State Natural Area provides specialized habitat for plants adapted to rocky surfaces, shallow soils and crevices.
The site is part of three state natural areas covering approximately 228 acres within Interstate Park , including the Dalles of the St. Croix and Interstate Lowland Forest.
Unlike typical forest environments, bedrock glades depend on a delicate balance of sunlight, shade and exposed rock to support their distinctive vegetation.
Wisconsin DNR officials say maintaining those conditions is an important part of protecting the ecosystem.
Staff from the agency's Bureau of Natural Heritage Conservation work to control invasive plants, preserve fragile soil crusts and prevent excessive tree and shrub growth from changing the habitat.
When woody vegetation becomes too dense, it can block sunlight needed by plants that thrive in open rocky environments.
To address those challenges, conservation workers may use selective clearing or prescribed fire to mimic natural disturbances that historically helped maintain the landscape.
The department did not announce a specific prescribed burn date in its public update.
The protected habitat demonstrates how Wisconsin's natural landscapes can support plant communities that differ significantly from those found in surrounding woodlands.
Located near the Wisconsin Minnesota border along the St. Croix River, Interstate Park is known for its geological features and scenic natural surroundings.
The DNR's latest educational update highlights the importance of protecting these sensitive environments while managing vegetation and invasive species.
