Sparta, WI – The Monroe County Sheriff 's Office issued a public response Tuesday, Oct. 27, denying allegations of jail misconduct and a possible cover up involving Sheriff Wesley D. Revels and corrections staff, while raising the possibility of a defamation investigation.
According to the sheriff's office, Michelle Squier Rave made allegations on social media concerning her treatment while incarcerated at the Monroe County Jail in 2024. The department described the claims as baseless and disputed several specific accusations.
Rave alleged that jail personnel violated Wisconsin law by keeping her in solitary confinement for more than 10 days. The sheriff's office countered that her placement was necessary for safety reasons rather than punishment for a rule violation.
Officials also disputed allegations involving a male corrections sergeant entering a shower area while Rave was using the facility. The department stated that two female corrections officers approached the shower and that Rave eventually exited after speaking with staff.
The sheriff's office additionally denied allegations that employees physically assaulted Rave or that Sheriff Revels authorized or concealed misconduct.
Authorities said Rave was held at the Monroe County Jail beginning Aug. 4, 2024, on a Wisconsin Department of Corrections hold and was transferred to Taycheedah Correctional Institution on Oct. 10, 2024.
The department reported possessing more than 300 body worn camera recordings documenting interactions with Rave during her incarceration.
Sheriff Revels also referenced Wisconsin's criminal defamation statute, saying the allegations would be investigated and referred to the district attorney for possible prosecution as appropriate.
The release did not announce criminal charges related to the social media statements.
The allegations and the department's responses have not been independently verified. The sheriff's statement represents the department's account, and Rave's complete response was not included in the release.
