Portage, WI – Columbia County Sheriff Roger Brandner is recovering from serious injuries following a motorcycle crash involving a deer earlier this month, revealing Wednesday, Oct. 21, that he may remain away from his regular duties for several more weeks.
According to a statement published by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, Brandner was riding his motorcycle Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, when a deer ran directly into his motorcycle.
The sheriff said he and his wife were returning from a church celebration for their grandson, traveling along rural roads and enjoying the fall scenery when the collision occurred.
Serious Injuries Required Emergency Treatment
Brandner described the crash as severe, requiring immediate emergency medical attention and extensive treatment.
He thanked Adams County sheriff's deputies, local first responders, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, medical flight personnel and the trauma team at Marshfield Clinic for helping save his life.
The sheriff also expressed gratitude for support from fellow Wisconsin sheriffs, colleagues and community members during his recovery.
Sheriff's Office Continues Operating
Despite his injuries, Brandner emphasized that the Columbia County Sheriff's Office remains fully operational.
Chief Deputy Bisch has assumed additional responsibilities while maintaining regular communication with the sheriff.
Brandner said he has remained involved in departmental leadership remotely since shortly after the accident.
He reassured residents that public safety operations have not been disrupted by his medical emergency.
Although he hopes to return to full strength, Brandner acknowledged that it could be several more weeks before residents see him physically back at work.
The sheriff thanked his family, medical teams and department employees for their continued support.
Residents needing assistance are encouraged to contact the Columbia County Sheriff's Office through its normal channels.
