Milwaukee, WI – A Milwaukee police officer with more than seven years of service has been criminally charged with sexual assault and disorderly conduct following an allegation of misconduct, authorities announced Tuesday.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department , Officer Nathan Enk was charged Monday by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office with one count of fourth degree sexual assault and one count of disorderly conduct.
Police said the department became aware of a significant allegation of criminal misconduct involving Enk in September. Enk was subsequently arrested by authorities in the jurisdiction where the alleged incident occurred, according to MPD.
Milwaukee police said Enk was placed on full suspension immediately after the department was notified of his arrest. He has remained suspended since Sept. 21.
The case was referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, which filed the criminal charges Oct. 5.
According to MPD, a conviction on the fourth degree sexual assault charge could carry up to nine months in jail and a fine of up to $10,000. The disorderly conduct charge could carry up to 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman called the allegation concerning and said department members are expected to meet high standards of integrity and professionalism.
"Any violation of department policies or the law will be addressed appropriately," Norman said in the department's statement.
Police also emphasized Enk's right to due process. The charges against him are accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
