Milwaukee, WI – September ended slightly warmer and wetter than normal in Milwaukee and Madison, with Milwaukee setting a daily rainfall record Sept. 19.
According to the National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan office, temperatures and precipitation during September 2026 were near normal to slightly above normal at the two climate sites. Much of the month's warmth showed up in overnight low temperatures.
Milwaukee recorded an average September temperature of 65.9 degrees, 0.9 degrees above the normal of 65.0. The average high was 72.2 degrees, 1.3 degrees below normal, while the average low reached 59.6 degrees, 3.2 degrees above normal.
Rainfall totaled 3.90 inches in Milwaukee, 0.74 inches above the September normal of 3.16 inches. The city received 1.49 inches Sept. 19, setting a daily rainfall record. The previous record for the date was 1.44 inches, set in 1997.
Milwaukee reached 90 degrees Sept. 2, its highest temperature of the month, while the lowest was 47 degrees Sept. 27.
Madison averaged 64.7 degrees for September, 2.7 degrees above its normal of 62.0. Its average high was 74.3 degrees, 1.4 degrees above normal, and the average low was 55.1 degrees, 4.1 degrees above normal.
Madison recorded 3.61 inches of rain, 0.18 inches above normal. Its largest 24 hour rainfall was 1.64 inches from Sept. 18 into Sept. 19. The month's high was 88 degrees Sept. 2, while the low reached 41 degrees Sept. 14 and Sept. 26.
The NWS said Milwaukee's Sept. 19 rainfall record was the only record tied or broken at the two sites. The September summary is retrospective; October conditions will depend on separate NWS forecasts and outlooks.
