Madison, WI – Elevated wildfire danger is raising concerns across portions of Wisconsin Friday, October 23, with 20 counties shown in the high fire danger category as residents prepare for outdoor activities, campfires and fall recreation this weekend.
According to a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources fire danger advisory, elevated conditions are expected from Friday through Sunday, October 25, particularly across western, northwestern and north central Wisconsin.
20 Counties Show High Fire Danger The October 23 fire danger map identifies 20 counties in the yellow, or high danger, category.
These include Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, Burnett, Washburn, Sawyer, Price, Polk, Barron, Rusk, St. Croix, Dunn, Chippewa, Pierce, Pepin, Eau Claire, Clark, Buffalo and Trempealeau counties.
Additional areas, including portions of central and southern Wisconsin, remain in the moderate category.
High fire danger means outdoor fires can ignite more easily and spread rapidly under favorable conditions.
Campfires and Outdoor Burning Raise Concerns Residents planning outdoor activities this weekend are encouraged to check current burning restrictions before starting any fire.
Fire officials recommend maintaining at least three feet of clearance around campfires, keeping flames small and having water and a shovel nearby.
Campfires should never be left unattended.
Before leaving, campers should thoroughly drown and stir the ashes until the fire is completely extinguished and cool to the touch.
ATV Riders and Homeowners Urged to Use Caution Improper disposal of fireplace and wood stove ashes can also spark wildfires.
Officials recommend placing ashes in a steel bucket or metal garbage can and disposing of them safely only after they have completely cooled.
ATV and other off road vehicle operators should check around mufflers for accumulated dry grass, leaves and pine needles that could ignite.
Fire Conditions May Change Through Sunday The elevated fire danger advisory extends through Sunday, October 25, although conditions and local burning restrictions may change.
Residents should check the Wisconsin DNR's WisBurn fire danger map before conducting outdoor burning.
Officials urge everyone to exercise caution as dry vegetation and outdoor activities increase the potential for accidental wildfires.
