La Crosse, Wisconsin – Heavy rain could trigger localized flash flooding today into Tuesday as repeated storms bring up to 3 inches to parts of the region.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, widespread showers and thunderstorms move into the region Monday morning and continue through Tuesday morning. Most locations can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain, while localized totals could approach 3 inches.
A Level 2 of 4 excessive rainfall risk covers much of the region, including La Crosse, Rochester, Winona, Decorah, Black River Falls and Wisconsin Dells. The Weather Service says urban and street flooding is possible within the risk area.
Rainfall estimates generally range from 1 to 1.5 inches around La Crosse, Winona, Eau Claire and portions of western Wisconsin. Pockets of 1.5 to 2 inches are shown near Rochester and farther south into northeast Iowa, but individual locations could receive more.
The flooding threat will increase where thunderstorms repeatedly cross the same areas. Heavy downpours could produce flash flooding and mudslides, while rises are also possible on some rivers and streams.
Drivers should never attempt to cross flooded roads. Residents should have multiple ways to receive warnings and be ready to move to higher ground if floodwater approaches. Campers and others spending extended periods outdoors should also remain weather aware.
Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms remain possible through Tuesday morning. Residents should pay particular attention to areas receiving repeated storms, where localized rainfall could approach 3 inches and flooding could develop quickly.
