Kenosha, WI – Drivers across Kenosha County are being urged to use extra caution this week after deer related crashes increased sharply in October, raising concerns about wildlife encounters on local roads during the fall season.
According to the Kenosha County Sheriff 's Office, deputies recorded 30 deer related crashes throughout October, compared with just seven in September. The increase represents more than four times the previous month's total, highlighting the growing risk for motorists as deer become especially active during autumn.
On Wednesday, Nov. 4, the Sheriff's Office shared a countywide crash map showing where the October incidents occurred. The red markers identify collisions across several areas, including locations near Bristol, Salem Lakes, Paddock Lake, Brighton and western Kenosha County.
The map also shows incidents near major travel corridors, including Highway 50, Highway 83 and Interstate 41, emphasizing that deer encounters are not limited to rural backroads.
Deputies Warn About Dawn and Dusk Driving
The Sheriff's Office emphasized that deer are especially active around sunrise and sunset, when reduced visibility can make animals more difficult to spot.
Motorists are encouraged to put away phones, monitor both sides of the roadway and reduce speeds near posted deer crossing areas.
Deputies also warned that seeing one deer cross the road does not mean the danger has passed. Additional deer may follow closely behind.
What Drivers Should Do if a Deer Appears
If a deer suddenly enters the roadway and a collision cannot be avoided, authorities recommend braking firmly while maintaining control of the vehicle.
Drivers should avoid swerving into another lane or off the roadway, where they could encounter oncoming traffic or additional hazards.
With November underway, the Sheriff's Office is encouraging motorists throughout Kenosha County to remain vigilant, particularly during early morning and evening commutes.
