Juneau, WI – Wisconsin drivers are being urged to remain alert this Halloween weekend as the annual white tailed deer mating season, commonly known as the rut, increases concerns about deer crossing roadways and causing potentially dangerous collisions.
According to the Dodge County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded to three car deer crashes during the most recent 24 hour reporting period, prompting officials to share updated information about deer movement and roadway safety.
The sheriff's office announced a new daily Deer Rut Report designed to help motorists understand when deer activity may be especially high throughout the coming weeks.
The reports will include the number of deer related crashes recorded during the previous 24 hours, along with a deer movement rating using a one to five star system.
Officials said the updates are expected to be posted daily at approximately 9 a.m.
The initiative comes as Wisconsin enters one of the most active periods of the year for white tailed deer.
During the fall mating season, deer frequently move across roads while searching for mates, creating additional hazards for drivers, particularly around dawn and dusk.
The sheriff's office also highlighted a concerning statistic from last year.
On Nov. 5, Dodge County recorded 12 car deer accidents, the highest single day total reported by the agency during that year's rut season.
With November beginning Sunday, officials hope the daily updates will encourage motorists to remain attentive and reduce the likelihood of collisions.
Drivers should watch for deer near wooded areas, agricultural fields and rural highways, reduce speed when visibility is limited and remember that additional deer may follow one crossing the roadway.
The sheriff's office said its reports will also provide information for local hunting enthusiasts interested in tracking deer movement.
Residents can follow the Dodge County Sheriff's Office for daily updates as the mating season continues.
