GREEN BAY, WI — A bitter 27 degree start, patchy freezing fog and potentially slippery pavement are creating an early November travel concern across northeastern Wisconsin. However, temperatures could climb more than 30 degrees by Tuesday before another cooldown approaches.
Drivers heading through Green Bay, De Pere and surrounding Brown County communities should remain alert for isolated slick spots.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a hazardous weather outlook issued at 12:29 a.m. Saturday identified patchy dense fog across northern Wisconsin.
Forecasters warned that freezing temperatures could allow slippery spots to develop wherever fog forms.
Freezing Fog Creates Early Travel Concerns Temperatures at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport registered 27 degrees early Saturday, with fair skies and calm winds.
Although conditions were clear at the airport observation site, localized fog could affect other portions of northeastern Wisconsin.
Freezing fog can deposit a thin layer of ice on exposed surfaces, particularly bridges, elevated roadways and untreated pavement.
Motorists traveling Interstate 41, Interstate 43 and Wisconsin Highway 172 should watch for changing visibility and isolated slick areas.
Allow additional braking distance where pavement appears frosty or unusually shiny.
The NWS expects mostly sunny skies Saturday, with temperatures climbing toward 50 degrees.
That improvement should reduce the freezing concern as temperatures rise.
Sunday Through Tuesday Brings a Significant Warmup Sunday continues the warming trend, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures reaching approximately 55 degrees.
West winds could gust as high as 25 mph, making exposed areas feel breezier.
Sunday evening brings increasing clouds and temperatures falling toward 33 degrees.
Monday stays partly sunny, with another afternoon high near 55 degrees.
Tuesday becomes the warmest day of the period, with sunshine pushing temperatures toward 58 degrees.
That represents a 31 degree increase from Saturday's early airport observation.
The warmer weather provides an opportunity for leaf cleanup, winterizing outdoor equipment and preparing homes for colder November conditions.
Colder Temperatures Return Later This Week Veterans Day brings mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 51 degrees.
By Thursday, highs slip toward 46 degrees, followed by lows around 31 degrees Thursday night.
Friday remains cooler, with temperatures reaching approximately 45 degrees.
Those readings reinforce the approaching winter season, although snow is not indicated in the supplied seven day outlook.
The NWS currently considers widespread hazardous weather unlikely from Sunday through Friday.
No significant tornado threat is identified in the outlook.
Residents should continue monitoring changing conditions as Thanksgiving approaches, especially when temperatures fall below freezing.
