Green Bay, WI – Drivers across northeast Wisconsin could face reduced visibility during several morning commutes this week as the National Weather Service warns that dense fog may develop through Friday, October 23. The potential travel concern comes ahead of a mild weekend, with Green Bay temperatures expected to reach 69 degrees Saturday before cooler weather returns early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued at 2:09 a.m. CDT Wednesday identifies dense fog as a potential concern across north central and northeast Wisconsin. Forecasters say fog could affect Wednesday morning travel, particularly near the lakeshore and inland west of the Fox Valley, with additional dense fog possible early Thursday and Friday.
The outlook covers numerous counties, including Brown, Outagamie, Winnebago, Manitowoc, Door, Oconto, Shawano and Marathon counties.
At Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport, fog and mist were reported early Wednesday, with temperatures around 38 degrees and visibility approximately three quarters of a mile.
The National Weather Service is requesting reports of fog reducing visibility below one quarter mile.
Five Day Green Bay Weather Outlook Wednesday 10/21: Patchy fog is expected before 9 a.m., potentially affecting the morning commute. Sunshine should develop afterward, with temperatures reaching approximately 67 degrees. Calm winds will become southwest around 5 mph. Mostly clear skies are expected tonight, with lows near 47 degrees and patchy fog possible between 1 and 4 a.m.
Thursday 10/22: Mostly sunny skies are forecast, with temperatures reaching approximately 63 degrees. Light northeast winds are expected. Although the daily forecast emphasizes sunshine, the Hazardous Weather Outlook identifies another possibility of dense fog early Thursday morning. Thursday night will be partly cloudy, with patchy fog developing after 10 p.m. and temperatures falling to around 45 degrees.
Friday 10/23: Patchy fog is possible before 8 a.m., followed by mostly sunny skies and an afternoon high near 67 degrees. Calm winds will become southerly around 6 mph. Friday night will be partly cloudy, with temperatures dropping to approximately 51 degrees.
Saturday 10/24: Mostly sunny skies are expected, with temperatures climbing to approximately 69 degrees. The forecast indicates a favorable afternoon for outdoor activities across Green Bay and surrounding Brown County communities. Saturday night will become mostly cloudy, with temperatures falling to around 54 degrees.
Sunday 10/25: Partly sunny conditions are expected, with temperatures reaching approximately 64 degrees. Mostly cloudy skies will develop Sunday night, with a 20% chance of showers and lows around 44 degrees.
Cooler Weather Returns Early Next Week The National Weather Service forecasts a high near 53 degrees Monday, with a 30% chance of showers. Monday night temperatures could fall to approximately 38 degrees, with a 20% chance of additional showers.
Tuesday is expected to remain mostly sunny, with highs near 53 degrees.
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center outlook for October 28 through November 3 favors above normal temperatures across Wisconsin, while precipitation probabilities remain closer to normal across much of northeast Wisconsin.
For now, the most immediate concern is morning visibility. Motorists encountering dense fog should slow down, increase following distances and use low beam headlights.
Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts before traveling during the early morning hours.
