Green Bay, Wisconsin – High waves and strong currents threaten swimmers and boaters today into Tuesday, with Lake Michigan waves reaching 12 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Beach Hazards Statement runs from Monday afternoon through late Tuesday afternoon. A Gale Warning is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning.
Gusty south winds will create hazardous marine conditions. Sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots are expected during the Gale Warning, with gusts reaching 35 knots.
Waves will build to 3 to 6 feet on Green Bay and 6 to 12 feet on Lake Michigan.
The combination of high waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous along affected beaches. The Weather Service warns that strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water, while high waves can sweep people from piers.
The hazard map includes shoreline areas from around Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay north toward Menominee, with marine advisories and warnings covering nearby waters.
Mariners should consider changing plans to avoid the hazardous conditions. The Weather Service advises boaters to remain in port, seek safe harbor, alter course or secure their vessels when necessary.
The marine threat begins building Monday afternoon. The Gale Warning continues through Tuesday morning, while the elevated risk of rip currents and other beach hazards lasts through late Tuesday afternoon. Swimmers, boaters and people visiting piers should continue checking local warnings before heading onto or near the water.
