Green Bay, WI – Residents across Wisconsin and the broader Great Lakes and Midwest region have a new opportunity to prepare for dangerous winter weather as the National Weather Service announces free online storm spotter training sessions for November and December.
According to the National Weather Service office in Green Bay, the upcoming virtual webinars will teach participants how to recognize winter weather hazards, stay safe during severe conditions and report important weather observations to forecasters.
The training is free, open to the public and designed for anyone interested in understanding winter weather and helping local weather offices monitor hazardous conditions.
Free Winter Weather Classes Offered Across the Midwest
The sessions will be hosted by different National Weather Service offices throughout the Great Lakes and Midwest region.
Although different meteorologists will lead each presentation, officials say the training material will remain similar across sessions.
That means participants can select whichever available webinar best fits their schedule, regardless of which participating office hosts it.
Topics include understanding winter weather, winter weather safety and procedures for reporting snow, ice and other hazardous conditions to the National Weather Service.
Why Winter Storm Reporting Matters
Winter weather can create dangerous travel conditions, including snow covered highways, icy roads and reduced visibility.
Reports from trained weather spotters can help meteorologists understand developing conditions and supplement observations from weather instruments and radar.
The training encourages residents to monitor changing weather, prepare for winter hazards and take appropriate safety precautions.
Participants will also learn what information is useful when reporting winter weather to their local National Weather Service office.
The agency has not announced a specific winter storm or issued a new weather warning through this training announcement.
Residents interested in participating can review the available sessions and register online.
