Fond du Lac, WI – Wisconsin drivers are being reminded to slow down, move over and remain alert when approaching emergency scenes as Crash Responder Safety Week runs Monday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 6, 2026.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff 's Office, the awareness campaign highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, highway maintenance crews and tow truck operators responding to crashes along Wisconsin roadways.
Drivers Urged to Protect Roadside Emergency Workers
Every traffic crash can bring multiple emergency responders onto busy roads, where passing vehicles create additional hazards while crews assist victims, investigate collisions and clear damaged vehicles.
The sheriff's office emphasized that motorists play a critical role in preventing additional crashes and injuries.
Drivers approaching an emergency scene are urged to reduce their speed, move over when safe and provide responders with enough space to complete their work.
The reminder applies to motorists traveling throughout Fond du Lac County and surrounding Wisconsin communities, particularly on heavily traveled highways and interstate corridors.
Safety Campaign Highlights Preventable Roadside Dangers
The Nov. 2 6 proclamation emphasizes reducing secondary crashes, improving traffic incident clearance and promoting public education about Move Over laws.
It also highlights the importance of training emergency responders and using crash data to improve roadway safety.
Officials are encouraging drivers to remain attentive when approaching flashing emergency lights, stopped vehicles or active crash investigations.
Sudden lane changes, distracted driving and excessive speeds can create additional dangers for responders already working in hazardous conditions.
The sheriff's office stressed that even a few extra seconds of caution can make a meaningful difference.
As Crash Responder Safety Week begins, motorists across Wisconsin are being asked to remember one simple message: Slow down, move over and give emergency personnel the room they need to work safely.
