Falling Waters, WV — A Sunday morning church service in Berkeley County was disrupted after a neighboring resident allegedly shouted threats and profanities toward churchgoers, prompting a law enforcement response over concerns that gunshots had been fired.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff 's Office, deputies responded to Marlowe Assembly of God at 9045 Williamsport Pike in Falling Waters at approximately 8:39 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18.
The caller reported that a nearby resident was yelling profanities, making threats toward church staff and congregants, and allegedly discharging a firearm.
Deputies Investigate Reported Gunfire
Deputy Robinson responded to the scene and investigated the reported disturbance.
Authorities determined that the sounds initially believed to be gunfire were actually fireworks and firecrackers being set off by the individual.
During the investigation, deputies learned that the man believed the church had been interfering with his hunting activities.
The Sheriff's Office said the individual's actions were connected to what he perceived as retaliation against the church.
Martinsburg Man Arrested
Investigators identified the accused as David Mitchell Bates, 39, of Martinsburg.
According to authorities, Bates refused to provide identification when requested by Deputy Robinson, stating that he was on his own property and was not required to identify himself.
Bates was subsequently arrested and charged with obstruction and disruption of church services.
He was transported to Eastern Regional Jail without further incident.
Authorities reported that Bates was later released on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond.
