Charleston, WV – Thanksgiving travelers across West Virginia may want to keep an eye on early season winter weather as a long range outlook raises the possibility of snow showers in neighboring parts of the Ohio Valley. Charleston, Morgantown and Beckley could experience different conditions ahead of Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26.
According to the Farmers' Almanac's Oct. 19 update, its Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and Midwest forecast region could experience colder, more winterlike conditions with scattered snow showers or flurries from Monday, Nov. 23, through Thanksgiving Day.
The forecast zone includes neighboring Kentucky and Ohio but does not explicitly identify West Virginia. Therefore, its projection cannot be treated as a confirmed snowfall outlook for Charleston or other communities in the state.
West Virginia's mountainous terrain makes early season snowfall especially variable. Higher elevations around Snowshoe and the Allegheny Mountains can experience snow while lower valleys remain warmer or receive rain.
Charleston's lower elevation often produces different November conditions than Beckley or the mountains surrounding Elkins. Morgantown and northern West Virginia can also experience colder weather during late autumn systems.
NOAA's broader November outlook favors above normal temperatures across portions of the Great Lakes region. However, that regional outlook does not establish Thanksgiving temperatures or precipitation types for West Virginia.
The historical record provides another reason November deserves attention. The Great Appalachian Storm of Nov. 24–27, 1950, brought extraordinary snowfall to parts of West Virginia, demonstrating that major winter weather can occur around Thanksgiving.
That historic event does not indicate a similar storm is expected in 2026.
For travelers using I 64 near Charleston and Beckley, I 79 through central West Virginia or I 68 near Morgantown, changing mountain weather could become important if snow develops.
Could West Virginia see snow before Thanksgiving 2026? Yes, particularly at higher elevations. However, no city specific holiday snowfall forecast has been established by the cited regional outlook.
Travelers should check National Weather Service forecasts closer to Thanksgiving for reliable snowfall and road condition information.
