Charleston, WV – With November 2026 approaching, last year's weather records reveal an unusual early season winter milestone in West Virginia's capital. Charleston broke one daily snow depth record and tied another on consecutive November days, despite temperatures averaging slightly above normal for the month.
According to the National Weather Service's November 2025 climate summary for Charleston, November 10 established a new daily snow depth record of zero inches, while November 11 tied the existing daily record of 3 inches. The observations highlight how daily weather records can involve different conditions, including dates with no snow cover.
Two Snow Depth Records in Consecutive Days Charleston's November 10 snow depth observation of zero inches broke the previous record, also zero inches, listed for 1928 in the NWS summary.
The following day, November 11, the city recorded 3 inches of snow depth, tying the daily record established in 1991.
Snow depth measures the amount of snow on the ground at the observation time, rather than the amount of new snow that falls.
The November 11 observation followed measurable snowfall during the early part of the month.
The National Weather Service recorded 1.3 inches of snowfall November 10 and another 2.3 inches November 11.
Together, those two days accounted for the month's entire measurable snowfall total.
November Snowfall Exceeded Normal Charleston recorded 3.6 inches of snowfall during November 2025, compared with a historical normal of 1.5 inches.
That represents a surplus of 2.1 inches, with snowfall reaching approximately 2.4 times the normal November amount.
The report ranked the month tied for the 16th highest November snowfall total in the station's 92 year snowfall record.
Despite the early snow, Charleston's average November temperature was 46.5 degrees, approximately 0.1 degrees above normal.
The month's average high reached 56.7 degrees, while the average low was 36.3 degrees.
Temperatures climbed to 73 degrees and fell as low as 18 degrees.
A Wet November Added to the Story Charleston also experienced above normal precipitation.
The National Weather Service recorded 4.53 inches of precipitation, compared with a historical normal of 3.20 inches.
That represents a surplus of 1.33 inches.
The month ranked tied for the 25th highest November precipitation total in 126 years of records.
The combination of above normal precipitation and measurable snowfall demonstrates how early season weather systems can produce winter conditions even when monthly temperatures remain near normal.
What November 2025 Means for 2026 For residents across Charleston, Kanawha County and surrounding West Virginia communities, last November offers a reminder that accumulating snow can arrive before December.
However, the previous year's snowfall and snow depth records cannot reliably predict conditions for November 2026.
The timing of cold air, incoming precipitation and individual weather systems will determine whether the region experiences rain, snow or mixed precipitation.
Last November demonstrated that a relatively mild monthly temperature average does not rule out accumulating snow.
As November 2026 approaches, will Charleston experience another early season snowfall, or could winter conditions arrive later this year?
