Charleston, WV – West Virginia may get an extended taste of mild October weather Oct. 12 18, but autumn nights are not going anywhere. The week is favored to run warmer and wetter than normal overall, while colder mountain valleys could still turn chilly at night.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, favors above normal temperatures across West Virginia. The outlook also favors above normal precipitation during the same period.
For the Mountain State, the temperature signal is particularly important because elevation and terrain can produce large differences from one community to another. A mild afternoon in Charleston does not necessarily prevent a much colder night in a sheltered Appalachian valley.
The CPC outlook does not provide daily high or low temperatures, so it cannot determine whether any locations will actually reach frost producing temperatures. Frosty nights remain possible where local conditions become cold enough, particularly in typically colder higher elevation and valley locations.
Rain opportunities are also part of the broader pattern. Above normal precipitation is favored for the week, but that should not be interpreted as a forecast for daily rain.
The outlook does not identify individual storm systems, rainfall totals or which days have the greatest rain chances. Those details will emerge in shorter range forecasts.
West Virginians should therefore expect a mild and wetter overall pattern , with considerable local variation possible because of the state’s terrain.
As Oct. 12 gets closer, National Weather Service forecasts should provide a clearer picture of rain timing, daytime warmth and whether any colder Appalachian nights could bring a frost threat.
