Tacoma, WA – A widespread frost threat is developing across western Washington, with temperatures expected to fall into the 30s Sunday and Monday mornings. Communities around Tacoma, Olympia, southern King County and the Hood Canal region are among those facing potentially damaging cold, with some locations expecting two consecutive mornings of frost.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, Frost Advisories are in effect for portions of western Washington from midnight to 8 a.m. PDT Sunday, Oct. 11, and again from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12 , depending on location.
Sunday morning's advisory covers the foothills and valleys of Pierce, southern King, Thurston and Lewis counties, along with the Middle Chehalis River Valley. Temperatures are expected to reach 34 to 36 degrees.
Communities affected Sunday include Enumclaw, Maple Valley, Covington, South Hill, Morton, Mossyrock, McCleary, Elma and Montesano.
The frost threat expands significantly Monday morning , when temperatures could fall as low as 30 degrees across a larger portion of western Washington.
Monday's advisory includes the Tacoma, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater areas, along with Chehalis, Rochester, Grand Mound and portions of the northern Washington coast.
Hood Canal communities including Brinnon, Quilcene, Seabeck and Skokomish are also included, along with coastal locations such as Neah Bay, La Push and Queets.
The National Weather Service warns that frost could damage sensitive outdoor vegetation, and unprotected plants may be killed.
Residents are encouraged to bring vulnerable potted plants indoors and cover tender outdoor vegetation before temperatures fall overnight.
Gardeners in foothill and valley communities should be particularly alert because some areas face frost on both mornings.
Monday morning is expected to bring the more widespread cold , with the advisory covering additional lowland and coastal communities.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts as temperatures and frost conditions may vary considerably by location.
